Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area Website Design

THE REQUEST

The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area (HCWHA) covers portions of Carroll, Frederick and Washington Counties. It is located just below the Mason-Dixon Line, generally viewed as the dividing line between North and South. With one foot in the north, and one foot in the south, the story of the Civil War, its causes, battles, heroes and villains … its very meaning can be told nowhere better than in this part of Maryland.

The mission of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area is to promote the stewardship of our historic, cultural, and natural Civil War resources; encourage superior visitor experiences; and stimulate tourism, economic prosperity, and educational development, thereby improving the quality of life in our community for the benefit of both residents and visitors.

Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area requested a redesign of their previous website. They wanted to showcase the beauty of Maryland's landscape, add a calendar of events, and create an interactive map and timeline to show the significant chain of events within Carroll, Frederick, and Washington Counties during the Civil War. They also wanted local history organized into three categories, which are available on the homepage for users at a glance.

THE RESULT

With careful research and planning, I designed a fully custom, responsive website that neatly displayed the rich history and beauty of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, with clearly organized topics and an easily editable timeline and calendar of events page.
