Discover Nutrition – Online learning from the American Society for Nutrition

THE REQUEST

In 2023, the American Society of Nutrition (ASN) was launching a learning hub for nutritionists, doctors, registered dietitians, and more. They needed a logo to communicate that this would be a rich collection of resources, including online courses, educational recordings, live virtual events, podcasts, and more. Most content would provide continuing education credit for registered dietitians and physicians.

Their desires were:

• Keep it simple and clean
• Incorporate existing ASN colors
• Create a distinct mark, but follow a similar visual structure to other online academies/learning portals in the industry

THE RESULT

Inspired by the concept of discovery and enlightenment, I created an icon using a bold letter D, in the same font as the written portion of the logo, but made symbolic. Turned on its side, the letter D here creates a tunnel, with the light of knowledge shining through at the other end. It also resembles a key hole from which light emerges, waiting to be unlocked with education.

In an effort to integrate the original ASN logo swooshes while maintaining a modern feel, the arch at the bottom of the icon was created by using one (its shape may be seen in the white negative space between the blue and green shapes). 

Five rays of light, plus the swoosh/arch from the original ASN logo, make up six white spaces, representing the six fundamentals of nutrition: water, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals.
